Stephanie Ka – Yan Choy is a British born Chinese fashion specialist currently studying her MA Fashion and Textiles course at De Montfort University.
She is keen to celebrate her cultural heritage and show a personal perspective of her experiences of growing up in the UK. Inspired by photographs taken while travelling to Hong Kong and places in China learning more about the history. This is her driving force.

Her research focuses on pushing the boundaries of multiculturalism. She explains
"it is interesting to me to break the mould and stereotypes of Chinese manufacture and culture. Chinese products in general are seen as being cheap quality. With the majority of fashion products being labelled ‘made in china’ a label often associated with poor sustainable working environments". British Chinese culture and fashion is not being celebrated enough; I want to challenge this.'

Using an electric mix of media, she incorporates digital, hand drawn and collaged elements within her illustrations. She tells a personal story of her family and of them working in their family run Chinese takeaway. She goes on to say ‘I would like people to understand that staff working in the Chinese takeaway are just like anyone else and should be treated as so. My family experienced racial abuse over the years".

The warm homeliness and rich cultural heritage that are so deep rooted to her is often taken for granted. Under apreciated, at times misunderstood and under -represented. She emphasises that through
her illustration work she brings awareness to the rich diversity and heritage of British Chinese culture.
Standing loud and proud.
